From the Mouth of Tyler

This child is hilarious. He just makes me laugh.

At breakfast this morning:
"God take care of me in his car. He has big boy bike. God takes care of me I scared of animals. He has blue car. He has blue car like Daddy's."

On the way to Carsten's doctor appointment this morning:
"I have skateboard. I park skateboard at doctor. I just almost eat skateboard. I not have skateboard now. Oh! I just almost spit out skateboard. I have skateboard now."

FYI: Tyler inserts the word almost into every sentence he can. And it doesn't mean almost. If he says he almost did something, he absolutely already did it.

On the way home from the doctor today the highway was closed for construction near our house and I had to get off a couple exits early. Tyler noticed and told me, "Mommy going wrong way." How did he know that? Two year old intelligence blows my mind sometimes. I don't think I would have noticed my parents doing that when I was 15. Actually I would probably only notice about 50% of the time now.

Tyler loves brats and last weekend when he was devouring one I told him he was a good little brat eater. "Oh no. I not brat eater. I big boy." He is also not a cutie pie, nut, goofball or Tyler Roo. He is a big boy. Unless of course he thinks it might benefit to be little. Then it's: "Oh no. I not big boy. Mommy hold me. I not big boy. I just little."

If I sing along to the music in the car: "No Mommy. Those guys just do it."

Oh, and then there's this. Tyler has renamed his puppies. One is still Hallie, one is Chloe, one is Lexi, and one is Lexi's Mommy. And he has taken his puppy care one step farther. He feels that he needs to take them outside to go potty multiple times a day. And apparently it's very important that they have pacifiers. It's getting a little out of control.

I know I'm forgetting some of the ones I was thinking of earlier. But you get the idea. He just cracks me up and I just love spending my days with him.  :-)

A Fast Two Months

I really, really, really can't believe Carsten was born two months ago! It has flown by so fast it almost breaks my heart a little bit. He was two months Wednesday and I have loved every day with him. And he is growing way too fast for me.

He had his two month check-up on Monday and he is doing great. He is 11 lbs. 10 oz. (25-50 percentile), and 23 inches (50th percentile). His shots were of course, not fun at all. I've never heard him cry so loud before. He almost made me cry. And he did make Tyler cry. Carsten recovered right away like such a little champ. But I think the shots were as hard on his big brother as they were on him. I had been prepping Tyler and explaining to him what shots were and why Carsten needed them, warning him that he would cry from them. But when he heard that baby scream it really scared him. :-(

Carsten is my sweet little snuggler. He is a very good, happy, content baby. He is a great eater and a great sleeper and he loves to snuggle up close. I love that about him. :-) While he is very happy almost all the time, he is also very particular. He really only cries when he's tired or hungry. But if he's tired, he wants to be put to sleep one very specific way. There is one right way to hold him. And a lot of wrong ways. He needs his head snuggled into an elbow, with the other hand patting his bottom. He would really prefer it if I had a third arm, because he also wants me to hold his hand. It's hard to do all three at once, but it is possible. Lucky for him. Thankfully, Carl and I have figured this technique out, but if he's left with anyone else, they might need to go through a little training.

Right now Carsten is starting to like his play gym he loved he bumbo when I tried it with him today. He was so happy to sit in it, smiling more than ever! And his very favorite thing is baths. Tyler liked baths too, but I think Carsten is a true water baby. He discovered the art of splashing yesterday and my entire kitchen was soaked. I had caramel bars cooling nearby and I had to move them and cover them - they narrowly missed being doused with water. I actually might consider wearing a raincoat next time. It was ridiculous. But also completely adorable.

Carsten might be the toughest baby around. His brother loves him so much, and he handles it with class. And usually patience.

This one was right after Tyler got a little confused about who was bigger and tried to sit on Carsten's lap. Carsten is lucky I'm quick. (No babies were harmed in the taking of these pictures.)

Carsten, you are such a sweet little boy. I love seeing your little personality develop and I can't even describe how your little smile melts my heart. We all love you so much!

Oh, and yep. They still look a little bit alike.

July 4th. And 6th.

I love the Fourth of July. Really, I love all holidays. And I'm trying to create some fun family traditions for each one. I don't know that we really had any 4th of July traditions growing up, but I always remember it being exciting. My dad would go park the van at the park early in the day so we'd get a good spot. Then we would all go and watch the fireworks. Sometimes we laid on top of the van, sometimes we sat in camping chairs, sometimes we brought friends, but we always had fun. It was fun to be able to share that excitement with Tyler this year.

We grilled brats and corn on the cob and I made my first annual 4th of July Dirt Cake. I love Dirt Cake and so I've decided that it is now a tradition. :-)  I promise you, next year we will have it again and it will be awesome again.

Random Tyler quote:
Me to Tyler (who LOVES brats): You're such a good little brat eater.
Tyler: I not a brat eater. I a boy. I a big boy!

Later that night I called him a cutie pie and was informed that he is also not a cutie pie. "I not a cutie pie. I Tyler!"

Anyway, Carl picked up some sparklers and fountains to do in the driveway. Tyler was very excited. We could have just called it a night and he would have been perfectly satisfied and thought the 4th of July was amazing.

But we didn't. We followed in my Dad's footsteps and brought a car there to park right next to where we would be sitting. It was our getaway car. In case things didn't go well. Then later we headed over to watch. I was nervous (and felt crazy) to bring Carsten. But his ears were well covered and he happily slept through most of them, just waking up to a couple booms at the end. (Why do they do those ridiculous, loud, bright flashes? Does anyone actually like them?) Tyler loved the fireworks. He loved everything about that night. He didn't act tired at all. He just loved every minute of it. It was a great success and I will always remember watching his sweet little face staring up and taking everything in. I watched him more than I watched the fireworks.

It turns out baby car seats make great toddler recliners.

In continuation of our fun 4th of July weekend we decided to enjoy the gorgeous day we had Saturday by going to the zoo. It was hot. But we had a great day.

Reunion

It's taking me awhile to catch up here. When we got back from Kansas we had one day at home to unpack and settle in, and the next day we had 25 people over for dinner. Our friends, Jesse and Andrea, organized a really fun weekend with lots of our college friends that we haven't seen in awhile. It started at our house that Friday night and Saturday we spent the day at a park and ended with dinner at their house. It was so much fun to see everyone and catch up.

I didn't manage to take very many pictures, but here are a few.

I wasn't there to see this cuteness, so I borrowed these from Jesse Sutherland. He did a great job taking pictures of everyone who was there.

And We're Back

Carl had the opportunity to go on a big fishing trip at the end of June. But he didn't really want to leave me and the boys at home while Carsten was still so little and while I wasn't supposed to be lifting things yet after my C-section. So the three of us, along with my sister and her dog packed the car and headed off to Kansas for eight days. I was nervous about a car ride with a newborn and a newly potty trained two year old - I was a little worried that it would take three days just to get there! But it only took about 13 hours. Whew! And the boys did great. Even when the air conditioning broke half way home on a 95 degree day. They were really so good. I was very thankful.

Of course we had a great time with my parents. Here are a few of the highlights.
